Horehound is an easy-to-grow perennial herb growing to roughly eighteen inches in height. It can be found growing throughout Europe and has been historically used as a medicinal by the Romans, Hebrews and Egyptians. The Egyptians referred to it as the “Seed of Horus.” Its chief use is in soothing coughs and asthma. It is said to be remarkably effective even for chronic cough. It can be taken in a variety of forms. A tea can be made by adding one ounce of undried herb to a pint of boiling water. This tea can be used like cough syrup. Horehound leaves are also used to flavor hard candy. As a garden plant, it is also beneficial as a grasshopper repellent.
Growing Information: Horehound is easy to grow. It can be surface sown directly in your garden in early spring or sown in pots and transplanted. Horehound prefers well-draining soil in a sunny location. Space plants a foot apart.
