Description
Calandula Officinalis, commonly known as Garden Marigold or Pot Marigold is a versatile plant that is useful to anyone with a garden or flower bed. Calendula is an easily grown ornamental flower sporting a range of 10-12″ yellow to orange flowers. These flowers are perennial in zones 9 and above. They are great as a border or landscaping plant because they will grow year-round.
Planting Calandula in or near your garden can increase your yields since it attracts beneficial pollinators like bees, butterflies and hoverflies. At the same time, calandula has insect repelling properties, which can keep your garden from being under attack. Most notably, they can help repel aphids away. Calandula is considered a good companion plant to beans, broccoli, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, asparagus, pumpkins and tomatoes. Calandula petals are also edible and can be incorporated into salads. The leaves may be bitter, but they are edible too.
Aside from ornamental and companion planting, calandula is a traditional medicinal herb for wounds, burns and inflammation. It has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and can be used to make topical skin and diaper rash salves. It can also work to help remove blemishes. Calandula bonds to moisture in the skin, which can help make skin look fuller and reduce the appearance of aging.
