Description
Goldenrod is a wildflower named for its bright yellow clusters. It is also a medicinal herb. Solidago canadensis is one of many speciesin the genus that share the name “goldenrod”. Solidago means “to heal.” Naturally, the dried herb is the foundation for everything from salves and creams to soaps to infused oils and tea.
Goldenrod contains the flavinoids, quercetin and kaempferol. Other healthy foods such as moringa, broccoli, onions, green tea and red wine also contain quercetin and kaempferol. These two closely related compounds are antioxidants that protect cells from free radicals. Therefore, they can help prevent cancer and heart disease.
These same two flavinoids in goldenrod are anti-inflammatory agents. Inflammation correlates to major degenerative diseases, including heart disease, obesity, cancers and Alzheimer’s. Accordingly, there is a correlation between anti-inflammatory herbs and prevention of these diseases.
Quercetin inhibits the production of inflammatory enzymes and cytokines. Additionally, it is an anti-aging compound since it promotes healthy, pliable blood vessels. The compound can even have a positive impact on liver fibrosis, arthritis and respiratory inflammation.
Goldenrod is a great herb for urinary support too. It slows the growth of candida and may increase the effect if antibiotics for UTIs. Goldenrod also contains saponins that have antibacterial properties, and it may decrease spasms related to urgent or painful urination.
Try goldenrod tea for seasonal allergies, sinius infection, colds and flu. You can also use fresh goldenrod as a poultice for bee stings.
Goldenrod is also beneficial to your other crops because it attracts bees and butterflies that pollinate. Honeybees produce honey from goldenrod. Livestock, goats, in particular, will use it for forage. We offer, wildcrafted goldenrod seeds from our farm.
Growing Information: Sow goldenrod seeds on the surface of your soil. Most potting soils are sufficient to grow goldenrod. Sandy soils work well. Do not cover the seeds.
