Description
Nutmeg is the large seed of the myristica fragrans tree, a native of the Spice Islands of Indonesia. Nutmeg is an aromatic seed that is rich in several essential oils, including myristicin, d-camphene, safrol, elemicin, eugenol and limonene. Nutmeg is most commonly ground down into a powder and used as a spice. Nutmeg is commonly used around the holidays as a spice in things like pumpkin pie and egg nog punch. Nutmeg can also be made into a tea, and it has been used both internally and topically as an herbal medicine throughout history. Some traditional remedies recommend that nutmeg oil be rubbed on the skin to soothe joint pain, rheumatism, headaches and even stomach aches. Nutmeg has also been taken as a tea or powder to sooth colds and flu as well as digestive problems including flatulence, diarrhea and nausea. Ironically, over consumption can cause nausea as well as other side effects such as dizziness, dry mouth, hallucinations, insomnia, decreased energy, slurred speech and more. Nutmeg has a somewhat numbing effect when chewed, and it has been used as a home remedy for toothaches. The aromatic oils also have a value in the fragrance industry.
Most nutmeg is found in stores as a pre-ground powder. But grinding your own ensures the freshest product because the inside of the nut has not yet been exposed to the air. World Seed Supply is proud to offer whole organic nutmeg from Indonesia.
