Description
Tribulus terrestris might peak your interest for its diverse usage in everything from warfare to sex. Regularly found in warm climates and the tropical regions of southern Europe, southern Asia, Africa, and northern Australia, this plant is widely naturalized in the Americas as well. It is highly tolerant of poor, dry soils where seeds can lay dormant for up to 7 years before germinating. This ?horny-little-devil? is a flowering weed that is known by a variety of common names, including Puncturevine, Cathead, Yellow Vine, Goathead, and Caltrop. The word ?tribulus? finds its root in Latin and means caltrop, or ?spiky weapon?. With that in mind, it is easy to picture the seeds (nutlets) that bear two to three sharp spines. These spikes resemble the horns of a devil or bull and can easily pierce through the toughest of surfaces. As a testament to this, it has been reported that these seeds have been known to punture bicycle tires. The offensive nature of the seed has been taken to another level. In southern Africa, these nutlets have been smeared with the poisonous juice of Acokanthera venanata and placed in the potential paths of unknowing victims. Known as ?gokshura? tribulus has long been used in Ayurvedic tradition for its sex-enhancing capabilities. Today, tribulus terrestris and its extract is most commonly used as a sex drive booster and performance enhancer. Tribulus is a hormone booster for both males and females. The extract is claimed to increase the body?s natural testosterone levels, increasing male sexual performance and helping build muscle. Body builders will also use tribulus in order normalize the body?s natural testosterone levels after steroid use. It should also be noted that tribulus contains harman and norharman, MAOI compounds which may react with or potentiate certain foods or drugs.
