Psychotria viridis is a tropical evergreen native to the Amazon jungle. This member of the rubiaceae family is related to coffee and has glossy green foliage that gives the two a similar appearance. Psychotria viridis grows to about fourteen feet in the wild, but it tends to be a bit smaller in cultivation. It also works well as an indoor plant if you prune it.
During the pruning process, you can propagate new plants by rooting the cut stems and even individual leaves. Psychotria viridis is extremely unique because the petioles (leaf stems) can root like a normal stem cuttings and turn into new plants.
Psychotria viridis likes filtered sunlight, and so it does well indoors. If kept outdoors year round or if moved out for the warmer months, this plant will develop whitish-green flowers that become berries. The berries start out green, then turn orange and eventually turn bright red. The berries each contain two seeds.

Psychotria viridis is the best plant if you are looking to get into micropropagation. MIcropropagation involves using tissue from mother plants to raise new plants. Typically, adding hormones will allow root formation from tissue samples. And usually, propagation must be done under near-sterile conditions to prevent mold.
Psychotria leaves potentially last months without special treatment. You can use the individual leaves or even parts of leaves to form new plants. If you lightly snap the petiole in multiple places, you will create a condition for multiple plantets to form wherever there is a break. While you can already technically micropropagate psychotria viridis without hormones, it gives you a basis to experiment with hormone recipies and to practice your sterile technique. This will increase your yields, and you’ll be able to apply newly acquired knowledge to other plants.
