Description
Salvia coccinea, or scarlet sage, is an ornamental member of the mint family growing up to three feet in height. The plant has appealing red flower spikes that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. It is also easy-to-grow and requires minimal care, particularly because it is drought-tolerant. However, more watering will produce more flowers. This species is considered a perennial in zones 9 and 10 and occasionally in zones 7 and 8. In zones 6-8 it will reseed itself. It is typically grown in beds as a border plant but has also been known to do well in containers.
Growing Information: Seeds can be started indoors eight weeks before the last frost or sown directly outside in the spring. Sow seed on the surface of the soil and press in. Keep the soil consistently moist until the plants are about 6″.
