Description
Nigella Sativa, commonly referred to as black seed or black cumin, is an annual plant. This medicinal and culinary herb is equally prized as an outstanding ornamental flower, adorned with pale, five-petaled flowers and gentle dill-like foliage. It is native to India, Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe and grows to be about 7-9 inches in height. The seed from this flower has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes and as a spice for cooking. Nigella Sativa was discovered in King Tutankhamen’s tomb and thus it is assumed that it played a significant role in Ancient Egyptian life. It has also been mentioned in the Old Testament and in Islam as a treatment for various diseases and symptoms such as cancer, inflammation, digestive problems and infections
Growing Information: Nigella Sativa prefers sandy, loamy and clay soils and acidic, neutral or basic soil that is well-drained. Seeds need to grow in full sun to partial shade and should be sown in springtime. Seeds should be sown directly outside in cultivated beds by pressing the seeds into the surface of the soil. Choose a place with a lot of sun and the proper soil type. Plant will flower from late spring until autumn.
