Description
Kola nut comes from the cola genus, which contains the evergreen trees, cola nitida and cola acuminata. Native to the African rainforest, these two plants are related to cacao. Their nuts, which are chewed by natives, contain caffeine and theobromine. In fact, kola nuts contain more caffeine than coffee. Kola nuts were traditionally chewed for their stimulant effects and to reduce hunger. Kola nut has been also used to increase energy, improve focus, aid digestion, help hangovers, open up breathing and increase urination. They have also been used to strengthen a weak heart and reduce migraines. But perhaps the most impacting of all, kola nuts have traditionally been used as a flavoring for colas.
