Waltheria Americana also known as sleepy morning, uhaloa or velvet leaf is a flowering medicinal herb growing up to 2 m (6.6 feet) tall. It also goes by the names marsh-mallow, monkeybush, boater bush, leather coat, buff coat, basora prieta, malvavisco, hierba de soldado, guimauve, mauve-gris, moto-branco, hioloa, fulutafu, kafaki) . Waltheria A. is typically found at elevations up to 1,200 meters above sea level and is widely distributed across the tropics. It usually grows in dry disturbed areas and enjoys well-drained soils.
The whole Waltheria plant is used medicinally, including the yellow fragrant flowers. Waltheria leaves and buds are used as a sedative herb, and they are sometimes used as blending herbs. In Hawaii, Waltheria Americana is chewed as ailment for sore throat, and it is used internally as an infusion for arthritis, neuralgia and chronic asthma. Due to its tannin content and possible antibacterial/vericidal/astringent properties, Waltheria Americana is also employed against the common cold, diarrhea, unwanted pregnancy, painful menstruation and fatigue in herbalism. It has even been used as an eye bath.
Waltheria Americana was also used to make ropes, sacking, padding and sandals. It is even now being studied as skin whitening cosmetic due to possible melanin inhibiting properties. In Africa Waltheria Americnana is used as livestock forage, containing 6.4% protein, 0.12% phosphorous and 0.51% calcium.
