Description
Cuban oregano, also known as Spanish Thyme or Mexican Mint is a very easy-to-grow Central and South American ornamental, culinary and aromatic herb. Also known by the latin names Majana amboinica or Plectranthus amboinicus, this oregano is easily recognized as a succulent plant with its velvety leaves and a pungent aroma. This drought-resistant member of the coleus family can be rooted almost efforlessly, even moreso than other coleus. The leaves are large, so one or two will usually do the job of a whole spring of tradional oregano or thyme. One plant can easily be reproduced to a lifetime supply in your garden with plenty to give to friends. Cuban oregano can be chewed fresh. It is juicy and fragrant but not overly pungent. There are some traditional recipes that call specifically for Cuban oregano. It has a taste that is a cross between oregano and thyme.
